Dash Cam Hardwire Kit: What It Is

Short answer

A hardwire kit is a cable that connects a dash cam to the car's fuse box instead of the charging socket. It powers the camera with the engine off, which parking mode needs, and leaves the socket free. The TWM A6 includes a hardwire cable. The A3 and S2 use a step-down cable for parking mode, sold separately.

Do you need one

For recording while you drive, no. The charging socket does that. For parking mode, yes: many cars cut power to the socket when they're switched off.

Hardwire cable or step-down cable

Both connect to the fuse box and turn the car's 12V supply into the 5V a dash cam runs on. A step-down cable usually has 3 wires: one for constant power, one that's live only with the ignition on, and one to earth. That's how the camera knows the car has been switched off.

Fitting it

The cable connects to the fuse box and runs up the pillar and along the roof lining to the camera. If you've never worked in a fuse box, have a car accessory shop or an auto electrician fit it. TWM's ₹990 dash cam installation covers mounting the cameras and running the cables. It doesn't include wiring for parking mode.

When comparing prices

Check whether the kit is in the box. A cheaper camera plus a kit bought separately can cost more than it looks.
