Does a Dash Cam Record When the Car Is Off?
Short answer
Only if it has a parking mode and a power source that stays on with the engine off. Plugged into the charging socket, most dash cams stop when the car does. The TWM R3, A6, A3 and S2 all have a parking mode. On the R3 it's a setting you switch on. The A6 comes with a hardwire cable, and the A3 and S2 need a step-down cable.
The two things it needs
- A parking mode. A setting that keeps the camera watching after you walk away.
- Power with the engine off. On most cameras that comes from a cable wired to the car's fuse box.
What each TWM dash cam does when parked
| Model | Parked recording | Cable it needs |
|---|---|---|
| R3 3 Channel | Parking monitoring, switched on in settings. Time-lapse needs a step-down cable | None for parking monitoring |
| A6 CarPlay | 24-hour parking surveillance | Hardwire cable, in the box |
| A3 4K | Time-lapse parking mode | Step-down cable, not in the box |
| S2 Mini 4K | Time-lapse parking mode | Step-down cable, not in the box |
TWM's ₹990 dash cam installation covers mounting the cameras and running the cables. It doesn't include wiring for parking mode, so for the fuse box use a car accessory shop or an auto electrician.
