Can a GPS Tracker Work Without Internet?
Short answer
It can find its position without internet, because that comes from GPS satellites. It can't show you that position live without a mobile network, because the tracker sends it to your phone over its SIM. Your own phone also needs data or Wi-Fi to open the app. In a basement or a no-network stretch, live location pauses until the signal returns.
Three links in the chain
- Satellites to tracker. No internet involved. The tracker needs a view of the sky.
- Tracker to TWM's servers. Over the mobile network, through the SIM inside the tracker.
- Servers to your phone. Over your phone's data or Wi-Fi, in the TWM app.
Break any one link and you stop seeing live movement.
2G or 4G
The TWM Wired GPS Tracker, OBD GPS Tracker and Car Charger With GPS use 2G. The ID card tracker, the TWM Pet Tracker and the asset tracker use 4G. Our view: 2G is fine for a vehicle. Pay for 4G when a person depends on the tracker, as with the 4G ID card GPS tracker.
