The short answer
A GPS tracker in India costs ₹1,800 to ₹5,000 to buy, and the price includes the SIM and the first year of app access. From year 2 you pay a renewal. Ours is ₹2,124 a year including GST, or ₹5,310 for 3 years (₹5,074 on the Wired GPS Tracker). Over 3 years the renewals can cost more than the device did, so ask for the renewal price in rupees before you pay for anything.
Most people compare GPS trackers by the price on the box. We think that's the wrong number.
Every tracker has a SIM inside it, and that SIM needs a data plan for as long as you want to see your car on a map. The box price is what you pay once. The renewal is what you pay for as long as you own the thing. We sell trackers, so we have an interest here, but this is how we'd do the sums if we were the ones buying: what you pay on day 1, what you pay every year after that, and 6 questions that get a straight answer out of any seller.
What you're actually paying for
A tracker bill has 3 parts.
- The device. You pay this once. It's the hardware: GPS chip, SIM module, battery or wiring.
- The SIM and data plan. The tracker sends its location over a mobile network, the same way your phone sends a WhatsApp message. It uses very little data, but the plan has to be active.
- The app or platform. These are the servers that keep your route history and send your alerts. Some brands bundle this with the SIM. Others bill it separately, and that's the bill people miss.
When a seller says "1-year subscription included", ask whether that covers the SIM and the app, or only one of them. With TWM trackers it's both. The SIM arrives pre-activated and the app access is part of the same plan.

Why does a tracker need a recharge at all?
Fair question. Your phone's GPS is free, so why isn't the tracker's?
Finding a location is free. GPS satellites broadcast to anyone who's listening. The cost is in telling you where the tracker is. The device has to get that location from your car in Pune to your phone in Bengaluru, and that takes a mobile network. No plan, no updates.
It's also why we're wary of "lifetime free" and "no monthly fee". Somebody is paying the operator. Either several years of data are already baked into the device price, or the tracker goes quiet when the bundled period ends. Ask which one it is, and ask how many years "lifetime" means.
What the renewal costs
This is the number most brands make you ask for. Here's ours. The renewal covers the SIM and the app together, and it's the same for every SIM-based TWM tracker, with 1 exception noted below.
| Renewal | Price, including GST | Works out to |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | ₹2,124 | ₹177 a month |
| 2 years | ₹4,000 | ₹167 a month |
| 3 years | ₹5,310 | ₹148 a month |
The exception is the Wired GPS Tracker, where the 3-year renewal is cheaper at ₹5,074. Its 1-year renewal is the same ₹2,124.
You can renew in the TWM app or through TWM support.
₹177 a month is less than most people spend on a single tank top-up for a scooter. Keep it in your head as a benchmark. If someone quotes you a lot more than that for a personal vehicle tracker, ask what you're getting for the difference.
Yearly cost: a worked example
Take the TWM Wired GPS Tracker. It's sold 2 ways, and the 3-year option is the one we'd point most people to:
| Option | You pay on day 1 | Covers | Total for 3 years of tracking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tracker with 1 year included | ₹3,000 | Device + year 1 | ₹7,000, with the 2-year renewal (₹4,000) added in year 2 |
| Tracker with 3 years included | ₹6,000 | Device + years 1 to 3 | ₹6,000, nothing more to pay until year 4 |
The 3-year bundle saves ₹1,000 over 3 years, and it saves you from the renewal date, which nobody remembers. If you might sell the vehicle next year, take the 1-year option and renew only if you still have it.
6 questions to ask before you buy
- What's the renewal price after the first year? Get a number in rupees. "Nominal charges" isn't a number. Ours is ₹2,124 a year including GST.
- Does the renewal cover both SIM and app? Two separate bills are easy to miss.
- Can I renew from the app? You don't want to be ringing a dealer every October. With ours you can, or you can renew through support.
- What happens if I forget to renew? With a TWM tracker, live updates stop at the end of the plan and start again when you renew. Ask whether that's true of the one you're looking at, or whether the SIM is deactivated for good.
- Is the SIM locked to the device? Most trackers use a machine SIM supplied by the brand. You generally can't swap in your own.
- How many phones can track the same device? It matters when 2 people share a car. The TWM app is 1 platform, so more than 1 person can log in and see the same tracker.
A seller who answers all 6 without hedging has probably thought about year 2. That's worth more than ₹200 off.
Cheaper is not always cheaper
A ₹999 tracker on a marketplace looks like a bargain. Usually 3 things explain that price:
- No SIM in the box. You buy one, activate it yourself, then recharge it every month.
- A paid app. The device is cheap because the platform fee is where the seller earns.
- No support. When the tracker goes offline on a Sunday, there's nobody to call.
Add those up over 2 years and the ₹999 tracker often costs more than one with a plan included. It's the printer-and-ink trick, with a SIM.
Which tracker is right for your budget?
- Under ₹2,000: the Car Charger Lite. It plugs into the socket, charges 2 phones and tracks the car.
- Around ₹3,000: the Wired GPS Tracker. It stays hidden, has a backup battery and supports engine cut-off. For a bike or scooter, this is the one we'd buy.
- Around ₹5,000: the OBD tracker if you don't want any wiring, or the 4G ID Card tracker for a child or a parent.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a GPS tracker with no monthly charges?
Every real-time GPS tracker needs a data connection, so someone is paying for it. "No monthly fee" usually means the plan is billed yearly, or a few years are bundled into the device price. TWM trackers include the first year, and after that you renew for 1, 2 or 3 years at a time.
Can I use my own Jio or Airtel SIM in a GPS tracker?
TWM trackers ship with a pre-activated SIM that's already set up for the device and the app. It works out of the box, so you don't need to arrange your own.
How much data does a GPS tracker use?
Very little. A tracker sends small packets of location data. There's no video and there are no images, which is why a tracker plan costs far less than a phone plan.
What happens when the one-year plan ends?
The tracker stops sending live updates until the plan is renewed. Renew before the expiry date so there's no gap in tracking. Renewal is ₹2,124 for a year, ₹4,000 for 2 years or ₹5,310 for 3 (₹5,074 for 3 years on the wired tracker). You can renew in the app or through support.
Is a more expensive tracker more accurate?
Not necessarily. Accuracy depends on the GPS chip and a clear view of the sky. Price differences mostly come from the form factor, battery size, network type (2G or 4G) and extras such as calling or engine cut-off.
