The short answer

Pick a wired tracker if theft is your main worry. Pick OBD or a car-charger tracker if you want to be tracking in under 1 minute with no wiring. Pick a magnetic tracker if you need to move it between vehicles, or track something that has no power supply of its own.

4 kinds of GPS tracker are sold for vehicles in India. People compare them on features: alerts, app screens, how many days of history. We'd skip all that at first and ask 1 question. Where does it get its power?

That single detail decides how hard the tracker is to find, how long it runs and how much effort it takes to fit. Everything else follows from it. We make all 4 types, priced from ₹1,800 to ₹4,899, so we don't gain anything by steering you to one of them.

The four types at a glance

Type Power Fitting Easy for a thief to remove? Works on bikes?
Wired Vehicle battery, with internal backup 15 to 30 minutes, best done by an electrician No. Hidden behind panels Yes
OBD OBD port Plug in, under 1 minute Yes, if they know where the port is No
Car charger 12V charging socket Plug in, under 1 minute Yes, but it looks like a normal charger No
Magnetic (wireless) Built-in battery Stick on, no tools Only if they find it Yes

Wired GPS tracker

A wired tracker connects to the vehicle's battery and sits out of sight, usually behind the dashboard or under the seat. Once it's in, you forget it exists. That's the appeal.

What's good

  • It never needs charging.
  • It's hard to find, which is the whole point when a car is stolen at 3 am.
  • It can alert you when the ignition turns on, or when the vehicle is towed with the engine off.
  • The TWM Wired GPS Tracker (₹3,000) supports remote engine cut-off through a relay, and has a backup battery that keeps it reporting if the main wires are cut.

What's not

  • Someone has to be comfortable with vehicle wiring. For most people that means a 20-minute visit to an electrician.
  • You won't be moving it from car to car.

Buy it if: you park on the street, own a bike or scooter, or want engine cut-off.

OBD GPS tracker

Every modern car has an OBD port, normally under the dashboard near the driver's knees. It's the socket a mechanic at a Maruti or Hyundai workshop plugs into to read fault codes. An OBD tracker goes into that same port and takes its power from it.

What's good

  • No wiring, no tools, no trip to a garage.
  • It moves to your next car in about 10 seconds.
  • The TWM OBD GPS Tracker (₹4,899) records harsh braking, rapid acceleration and sharp cornering. If someone unplugs it, you get an alert with the last known location.

What's not

  • Anyone who knows cars knows where the port is. Pulling the tracker out takes as long as plugging it in.
  • It doesn't fit two-wheelers.

Buy it if: you want to keep an eye on a family car, a new driver or a leased vehicle, and you'd rather not touch the wiring.

Car-charger GPS tracker

This one is a working phone charger with a tracker inside. It plugs into the 12V socket and looks like every other charger sold at a traffic signal.

What's good

  • It hides in plain sight. Nobody unplugs a charger because they suspect it.
  • You get a phone charger out of it. The Car Charger Lite has Type-C and USB ports.
  • At ₹1,800 it's the least expensive way to start tracking a car.

What's not

  • In many cars the socket only has power when the ignition is on. Check yours before you rely on it overnight.
  • Cars only.

Buy it if: you want something discreet and affordable for a personal car.

Magnetic (wireless) GPS tracker

"Wireless" is a confusing word here, because every tracker sends its location wirelessly. What it means is no power cable. The tracker runs on its own battery and sticks to any metal surface with a magnet.

What's good

  • It goes anywhere: car, bike, truck, luggage, a generator on a site in Noida.
  • There's nothing to install.
  • The TWM 4G Asset Tracker (₹4,799) has a 10,000 mAh battery, an IP67 water-resistant body and a light sensor that alerts you if it's pulled off.

What's not

  • You have to charge it. How often depends on how much the vehicle moves.
  • No ignition alerts and no engine cut-off, because it isn't connected to the vehicle.

Buy it if: you track more than 1 vehicle, rent vehicles out, or need to track something that doesn't have a battery.

Which one should you buy?

Your situation Our pick Price
Bike or scooter parked outside Wired GPS Tracker ₹3,000
Car, theft is the main concern Wired GPS Tracker ₹3,000
Car, you want zero installation OBD GPS Tracker ₹4,899
Car, tight budget Car Charger Lite ₹1,800
Teenager borrowing the family car OBD GPS Tracker ₹4,899
Several vehicles, or equipment 4G Asset Tracker ₹4,799

Look at rows 1 and 2. Our cheapest answer for theft is also our best one, and it costs ₹1,899 less than the OBD tracker. More money doesn't buy more protection here. It buys convenience.

Every price above includes the SIM and the first year of app access. For what you pay after that, see GPS tracker charges in India.

3 mistakes that waste the money

  1. Buying OBD for theft protection. It's a good monitoring tool. Against a thief, a hidden wired unit is much harder to defeat.
  2. Forgetting to charge a magnetic tracker. Put a reminder on your phone for the 1st of every month. A tracker with a flat battery tracks nothing.
  3. Fitting a wired tracker where it's easy to reach. If you can spot it in 10 seconds with a torch, so can a thief. Ask the installer to tuck it behind a panel.

Frequently asked questions

Will a wired GPS tracker drain my car or bike battery?

A tracker draws a small current. On a vehicle you use regularly, you won't notice it. If a vehicle is going to sit unused for many weeks, start it now and then, as you would anyway.

Does fitting a GPS tracker affect my vehicle warranty?

OBD, car-charger and magnetic trackers don't alter the vehicle. A wired tracker connects to the electrical system, so have it fitted properly and check your manufacturer's warranty terms if you're unsure.

Can I install a wired tracker myself?

If you're comfortable with a multimeter and vehicle wiring, yes. Most owners take it to a local car or bike electrician, who can fit it in under 30 minutes.

Which tracker is best for a scooty or bike?

A wired tracker. Two-wheelers don't have a car-style OBD port or a 12V charging socket, and a wired unit stays hidden under the seat or behind the side panel.

Do all four types use the same app?

Yes. Every TWM tracker shows up in the same TWM app, so you can track a car, a bike and a pet from 1 account. More than 1 person can log in too, so 2 people who share a car can both see it.
