Wired or Wireless GPS Tracker: Which to Buy
Short answer
Buy wired if the vehicle is yours and you want the tracker hidden and always powered: it runs on the vehicle's battery and supports remote engine cut-off. Buy wireless if you can't touch the wiring or want to move the tracker between vehicles. Wireless means either a plug-in unit (OBD port or charger socket) or a magnetic unit with its own battery.
Side by side
| Type | Power | Fitting | TWM model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired | Vehicle battery, plus a backup battery | Wired in and hidden. Cars and bikes. | Wired GPS Tracker, ₹3,000 |
| OBD plug-in | OBD port | Plugs in. Cars only. | OBD GPS Tracker, ₹4,899 |
| Car charger | Charging socket | Plugs in. Looks like a charger. | Car Charger Lite, ₹1,800 |
| Magnetic | Its own 10,000 mAh battery | Sticks on with a magnet. | 4G Asset Tracker, ₹4,799 |
The trade-off
Power decides everything. A plug-in tracker takes seconds to fit and the same few seconds to pull out. You get an unplug alert on the OBD tracker and the Car Charger Lite, but tracking stops there. A magnetic tracker goes anywhere and then needs charging. A wired tracker needs someone comfortable with vehicle wiring, once, and after that you forget it's there.
For a bike or scooter, the wired GPS tracker for car and bike is the one that fits.
